Drs. Glen and Sabinin and the undergraduate students at Bridgewater State University would like to thank everyone in Georgia and in the USA for supporting our 2016 trip! As a result, we all had truly transformative experiences traveling abroad to Georgia - both personally and professionally. Please see our Travel Adventures 2016 and Education in Georgia pages to learn about our trip. You can also check out our YouTube video to see the highlights of our journey.
While this initial trip was small in scale, including only 4 students from Bridgewater State University, we have been approved to bring a much larger group of 15 students to Georgia in May 2017. We are very excited about this opportunity and many more in the future. If you would like to join us, please contact us or the BSU Study Abroad Office for more information.
This year, our time in schools (Buckswood International School and 1st Experimental School of Tbilisi) has allowed us to form excellent working relationships. We modeled engineering and logic lessons lessons using our own resources. We were glad to leave approximately $1000USD of material with the schools for their own use. We observed elementary classes (grades 2-6) and were inspired with the professionalism of the teachers and quality of the lessons.
While our initial trip focused exclusively on STEM education, we took time to meet with other researchers and organizations in Georgia to help diversify and strengthen our relationship. As we plan for the May 2017 trip, our conversations and partnerships have hinged on three main areas which are central to BSU’s mission: STEM education, interdisciplinarity with STEM, and service (social justice and service learning). Therefore, while we will continue to have a strong focus on education, we will have opportunities for students in a diverse range of disciplines, including earth science, geography, biology, sustainability, history, anthropology, archaeology, political science, and others.
We very much look forward to returning to Georgia in 2017 and beyond. We thank everyone for their support this year!
